Rockport, Texas, the home of Circle W RV Ranch, is the location of the fascinating Texas Maritime Museum. Some may not be aware of the rich maritime history that exists on the Gulf Coast of Texas.
The Texas Maritime Museum opened its doors on July 1, 1989.Since then the museum’s mission is to excite and educate the public about Texas Maritime history and artifacts.
The exhibits fall under four main areas:
Boat and Shipbuilding
Thriving water economies need boatbuilders. They provide vessels for the oil and gas and fishing industries and ships for military use. In this exhibit, the visitor learns about the shipyards and local boat builders. For example, Westergard-Rice and Platzer Boat Works supplied ships for the military. For boats used in offshore fishing, shrimping and coastal water work, local boatbuilders included the Farley Brothers and the Rockport Yacht and Supply Company.
Exploration and Settlement
The development of Galveston and Indianola is explored on this exhibit. It includes fascinating information on the doomed 1685 -1686 French exploration searching for the Mississippi River. The Age of Steam exhibit delves into community development inland.
Oil and Gas Exploration
Here, visitors learn about the ways petroleum is extracted from a few feet to several thousand feet below sea level. The exhibit features a scale model of Bullwinkle, the largest offshore drilling platform in history.
Commercial and Sports Fishing
The commercial fishing industry in Texas significantly contributes to the state’s income. The exhibit focuses on how the shrimping and fishing industries developed in the area. Sports fishing is showcased in the Allure of Fishing exhibit.
